Risky local restaurant in Mosul attracts more visitors


The people of Mosul believe there is nothing left to fear. People make barbecue under this damaged building supported by a single pillar. People come here to fill their stomachs without considering the building might collapse. The owner of the restaurant confirms the building might collapse. But, he says they “have seen things way more dangerous than that.” Owner: The idea of opening this restaurant came from unemployment. It is very difficult to find a job here. We came here and saw this space. Then we opened the restaurant here. Thank God, our work is good. Although our restaurant is under a damaged building, it is safe. People here are not afraid. We are not afraid of the building collapsing. We are often rescued from death, how can we be afraid of this? We were continuously bombarded by mortars, how can we be afraid of this? Three persons run this restaurant on a daily basis. Each does its share of the work. According to them, people can’t find such delicious food with affordable prices in all of Iraq. Clients increase day after day, according to the owner. This man is a director of a Mosul school. He says besides being afraid, Mosul people are hungry and have no money. Therefore, they are obliged to visit this restaurant. Client: One day I was passing here in Gogjali and I saw this restaurant. I noticed the restaurant hinges on one single pillar. It is a very simple restaurant, but their foods are cheap and very delicious. Mosul has been famous for its barbecue. It was part of people’s daily life to visit the Bazaar and eat Barbecue. After the liberation of some neighborhoods in Mosul, people began to go back to work. After spending a tireless day at work, they fill their stomachs with barbecue from this risky restaurant without fearing death.
